Supreme Court gives nod to Hockey India for declaring election results

The Supreme Court today allowed Hockey India (HI) to declare the results of the election held on July 28 for its executive body.

A bench of justices Altamas Kabir and AK Patnaik, while allowing Hockey India to declare the results, however, said the same would be subject to the final outcome of the writ petition filed by the Bombay Hockey Association challenging the election.

The apex court had on July 30 allowed HI to go ahead with the elections but restrained it from announcing the results after vacating the stay granted by the Bombay and the Delhi high court which had restrained it from conducting the elections.

It had permitted conduct of the election after both Hockey India (HI) and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) contended that if the elections are not held by July 31, the country would not be able to participate in any international hockey event.

The Delhi high court had on July 28 stayed the election process in HI following the failure of the central government to clarify the legal position regarding HI and Indian Hockey Federation (IHF).

The Bombay high ourt had also stayed the HI electionsc for three weeks on a petition filed by Mumbai Hockey Association.
