Govt of India’s letter to FIH

I am writing this to inform you that the government has de-recognized the Hockey India by a speaking order on 5.8.200, a copy of which has been endorsed to you. As such the Hockey India is no more the recognized National Sports Federation (NSF) for the management, control and promotion of hockey in the country, and is also not authorized to select and field the national team in international competitions.

In view of the above development, the Indian Hockey federation (IHF) stands recognized by the government as the sole NSF for Hockey in India in the light of the judgement dated 21.5.2010 of the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi in Writ Petition (civil) No. 3713/2008, which has also been accepted by the Indian Olympic Association as well as the HI before Hon’ble High Court of Delhi in Writ Petition (Civil) No. 4978/2010. Based on the direction of the Hon’ble Court, a copy of the judgement dated 27.7.2010 was also mailed by the IOA to the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

The president, IHF has confirmed to the Government that the process of unification of the Men and women hockey bodies at the national level is underway, and is expected tobe completed soon. Once this process is completed and IHF becomes fully compliant with the constitution of the FIH, they will approach FIH for recognition / affiliation / membership.

In the meanwhile, it is requested that the IOA or the Sports Authority of India (SAI) may be permitted to field the Indian team for participating in various FIH recognized competition This would be necessary in the interest of hockey in India.

We are confident that post unification of the men and women bodies, the IHF would completely meet the constitutional requirements of the FIH. It may kindly be noted that IHF is a long standing body, which was set up in 1928, and the Indian women hockey federation (IWHF) too was set up in in 1951. hence, post-merger there should not be any doubt about their capacity to take care of the promotion and development of hockey in India.

You are requested not to assign any international tournament or have any commercial dealings with HI under the impression that they are the National Sports Federation for Hockey in India because they no longer enjoy the government recognition and have assumed the character of a private body.

We sincerely expect to receive the full support and cooperation of FIH in restoring hockey to the position it deserves in the country.
