Hockey India sanctions Rs.5 lac to ailing Olympian Ravinderpal Singh

Responding to a general appeal made by the family of Olympic gold medalist Ravinderpal Singh, Hockey India sanctions Rs.5 lac to defray his medical expenses. Moscow Olympic Gold medalist and World Cupper Ravinderpal has been undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, since 15 days. He has now become COVID negative but is having lung complications. Pragya Yadav, his niece confirmed that Hockey India contacted the family and will be directly paying the expenses to the Hospital. “We are very much relieved” she said.

Born in Sitapur (UP) on 6th September 1958, Ravinder Pal Singh had all his hockey training at Meerut (UP). He excelled as a centre-half for Indian teams for six years from 1979 to 1984. The double Olympian (1980 & 1984), played the Cuttack Senior Nationals in 1976 and represented India at the 1979 Junior World Cup. He won the gold at the Moscow Olympics and then regularly represented India till 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Besides, he has played all the major tournaments in the early 1980s including Champions Trophy – Karachi (Pakistan) – 1980 & 1983; Silver Jubilee 10-Nation Cup, Hong Kong – 1983; World Cup – Mumbai (India) – 1982; Asia Cup – Karachi (Pakistan) – 1982; India-Pakistan Test Series – 1981; Europe Tour – 1981; Quadrangular Malaysia – 1980.
