GRAHANANDAN 'NANDY' SINGH

Known to the sports world as ‘Nandy Singh’, double Olympian Grahanandan Singh shone as a player and administrator. Born in February 1926, at Lyallpur (now in Pakistan), Nandy played hockey for Government College, Lahore, and Punjab University, in the inter-University (1944-1946) championships, before emerging as a force to reckon with in the national scene.
After figuring in the Punjab team that participated in the 1945 and 1946 (gold) Nationals, he joined Indian Navy and got to represent premier outfit Bengal in the 1947 and 1948 Nationals. Nandy went on to play well in London in given opportunities, scored a brace of goals against Argentina as well.
Nandy thereafter played the Nationals for Services (1951 to 1958, missed the 1956 edition due to injury) with distinction. His selection for the 1952 Olympics was on popular choice, and deservedly got his second Olympic gold.
Post playing career, he served sports as Secretary, Services Sports Board and Treasurer, Indian Olympic Association. Working as Administrator of Delhi’s National Stadium, he oversaw laying of first synthetic turf and conduct of hockey there in the 1982 Asian Games. Before that, he was the main brain behind planning and preparation of the 1975 World Cup team – which won the gold – as the adviser of Indian Olympic Association which was handling the hockey affairs. He was also manager of the 1984 Olympic team.2006
Nandy is remembered for his services being rendered as the dynamic Secretary of the Delhi based Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Society which regularly runs various age group competitions for boys, a Champions Colleges Cup besides hugely popular Senior Nehru Cup.
He breathed his last on Dec 7, 2014 in New Delhi
