Bespectacled Olympic gold medalist Gurbux Singh is a celebrated Indian field hockey player. He shone as defender, figured in two Olympics (1964 & 1968), was a selector, coach, State Hockey Association administrator, entrepreneur and columnist.
Born on 11th Feb.1936 at Peshawar (now in Pakistan), the lanky defender made his maiden international tour as a part of Wanderer's team that went to New Zealand in 1961. Won gold at the 1962 Ahmadabad International Cup, visited Kenya (1963), won gold at the Lyons Cup (1963), got selected for the 1964 Olympics team where India won gold. He also won gold at 1966 Asian Games and led India at the Mexico Olympics (bronze).
He worked for Customs, represented Bengal at the National Championships.
He was awarded Arjuna in 1966.
He published his biography My Golden Days in 2018
He lives in Kolkata
