Born in Madanapally in the undivided Andhra Pradesh, Usman Khan represented Tamil Nadu in the domestic circuit. He was part of the Tamil Nadu State team in the early 60s. After being part of the Madras University hockey team, he also represented Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in the All India Inter-University Championships. From Aligarh, he moved to Calcutta where he got a job in the Customs. He was selected for the Indian team that toured Europe where played test matches against France, Holland, Malaysia and Japan. Gurbux Singh was the captain. He was also part of the team that won a prestigious tournament Madrid Cup the same year (1967). He was a left winger.
