Sarwanjit Singh was one of the two players on standby for the London Olympics. Sarwanjit Singh made his senior India debut in 20007 under coach Joaquim Carvalho at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, where India won bronze. However, it has not been easy for the youngster, who has had to face the axe often before finally finding his feet on the international stage. After his debut, he had to wait for a whole year to get another international outing, at the 2008 Azlan Shan Cup. However, before making his way into the senior India side, the talented forward with a penchant for opportunistic goals inside the circle had been a regular member of junior sides and, with age on his side, continued to be a part of the age-group tournaments even after making his senior team debut. He toured Germany and Malaysia as part of the junior India teams, all the while working on his game and fitness to earn a recall. In fact, the Azlan Shah tournament is undoubtedly his favourite, since every time he was dropped from the side, he came back in this event. His persistence was finally rewarded when coach Harendra Singh called him up to the national squad in 2009 and gave him an almost permanent slot upfront, which peaked with a gold at the Azlan Shah Cup 2009. Born on July 3, 1988, he was also part of the squad for the 2010 World Cup and scored a goal there. He finally got noticed with his twin goals against England in the Commonwealth Games semifinal, which helped India reach the title clash in the competition for the first ever time. It was also the first major final for India in a long time. The 24-year-old is employed with and plays for Punjab & Sind Bank on the domestic circuit.
