India wins the Sultan of Johor Cup
Manpreet Singh’s young Indian team outplayed and outpaced the hosts Malaysia to win their maiden Sultan of Johor cup in three attempts. The finalists of the last edition, India, struck goals in rhythm to out play Fitr Saari led Malaysia.
India led 1-0 at half time, and then Affran Yousaff deflected a speedy Ramandeep Singh’s sprint to consolidate the lead.
Captain Manpreet Singh’s slop shot off India’s seventh penalty corner took the match out of the hosts, much to the chagrin of the full stand.
Earlier India wasted all the six pcs, and over all 8-1 record.
India and Malaysia yesterday played their last pool match, which ended 3-3 after India established a 2-0 lead at half time.
India team finished fifth at the first Sultan of Johor Cup, and then last year it lost the final to England, which now finished fifth.
England won the Fair Play Trophy, Fitr Saari of Malaysia the Best Player of the Tournament award, and Korean Goalie the best goalie award while Surjit Academy’s Harjit Singh was declared the Most Promising player.
