Gurjinder guides Chandigarh to 1-0 win over Delhi
Gurjinder Singh scored late in the second half to guide Chandigarh Comets to a narrow 1-0 win over Delhi Wizards in a round-robin match of the World Series Hockey on Wednesday.
Gurjinder scored the elusive winner by converting a penalty corner in the 64th minute to help the Chandigarh side move up in points table to the third position with 12 points.
Delhi looked sharper of the two sides in the beginning but their performance dipped as the match progressed.
Chandigarh, on the other hand, took their time to get settled and were content to play the waiting game.
Chandigarh were by far the better side on display as they had more circle penetrations than their rivals.
Both Delhi and Chandigarh created a few chances in the first two quarters but their forwards failed to convert the opportunities into goals.
If the first half turned out to be a stalemate, the first quarter of the second period was no different as both the teams struggled to break the deadlock.
Finally, it took a brilliant penalty corner strike from Grujinder in 64th minute to break the stalemate and secure the vital three points for the visitors.
Minutes later, Delhi got a golden opportunity to equalise but Rajpal Singh’s shot from top of the ‘D’ was blocked by an alert Chandigarh goalkeeper Harjot Singh.
While Chandigarh moved up in the points table, Delhi continued its slide and are now languishing at the second last position in the eight-team event with seven points from as many games.
While Delhi will face second-placed Bhopal Badshahs in their next match at the same venue tomorrow, the Chandigarh outfit will travel to Jalandhar to play table-toppers Sher-e-Punjab on Friday
