The Indian men’s team were dealt a severe blow when their FIH Pro League matches against Spain and Germany later this month were postponed because of Covid-induced travel restrictions.
India were to play double-headers against Spain on May 15-16 and Germany on May 22-23 but the deadly second wave of the pandemic engulfing the country has compelled steps to suspend flights into several countries.
The FIH said on its micro-site that it, along with the concerned national associations, are trying to re-schedule the matches. The matches against Great Britain in London on May 8-9 were also postponed earlier and it adds to the backlog of matches of the FIH Pro League hit hard by the pandemic.
The FIH was reported to have agreed to use percentage points to determining the final placings of the league, the second edition of which began in January 2020.
The ratio of the number of points earned to those available will be the basis of percentage calculation in the nine-nation leagues. In the men’s section, table leaders Belgium are on top with 82.05 but Germany are close on their heels with 79.17. The Netherlands are runaway leaders in the women’s section with 87.88 leaving Argentina distant second with 63.33.
