Karachi: PHF president under fire

Karachi: Scores of former Olympians and national hockey players came together to slam Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and demanded his resignation for failing to improve the state of the game in the country. “Jamali is running a one-man show in the federation as if he is a dictator, but he has to go if Pakistan hockey is to be revived,” insisted former skipper and Olympian Hasan Sardar at a press conference here on Thursday. Pakistan’s national sport has been under scanner since the it gave its worst performance in Beijing, finishing a lowly eighth. Showing a rare unity, the former hockey players who attended the press conference, raised slogans saying “Go Jamali Go” and demanded Jamali’s replacement by the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party leader Qasim Zia. Jamali, who is a former Prime Minister, has refused to step down after the Beijing Olympics debacle and insisted that he was not solely responsible for the national team’s debacle. Sports minister Najamuddin Khan on Wednesday repeated his earlier demand that Jamali must resign like the coaches. PTI
