The popular D.A.V. public school, Lawrence Road, in Amritsar takes firm

steps towards promoting hockey.

The Hockey fervour took off at DAV Public School,

Amritsar, in December last year when Principal Mrs. Neera Sharma rang

up the World Cup Hockey Star Ashok Kumar on the eve of death

anniversary of his father Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey wizard. Sports

legends like Dhyan Chand don’t fade into oblivion with time, but emerge

strongly as role models to inspire generations. To quote the words of

wisdom spoken by Ashok Kumar when he said to Principal: “Memories of my

father will live on as long as the game is played. Introducing and

promoting the game in the school will be the best tribute one can pay

to immortalize him. “undefined

The same sentiment was evoked when the Principal, Mrs. Neera Sharma

invited the renowned Hockey writer Prof.Paramjit Singh Randhawa to

address the morning assembly of the school which was exclusively

dedicated to hockey, recently.

Prof. Randhawa emphasized that our National Sport, Hockey should be

promoted at any cost. He wanted the children to be enthused with the

spirit of ‘Chak De India’. To the Principal’s question as to whether

Hockey should be introduced in the school, there was a resounding ‘YES’

by the students. With the objective of enthusing the young ones with

fervor for the sport and to inspire them with the illustrious life of

Sh.Dhyan Chand, the Principal declared immediately that hockey would be

a part of the school curriculum.

undefined

The following activities and thinking, go on to prove the seriousness

with which the premier educational institution in Amritsar has taken up

the task of promoting the game of hockey:

I SCHOOL TEAMS: Separate teams for Girls and Boys have been

constituted. They are being coached by the National Hockey player, Mr.

Deepak Kumar. Friendly fixtures are becoming a common feature. The

Girls are exhibiting their prowess at the sport with full gusto – they

are improving day by day.

II HOCKEY NURSERY: ‘Catch them young’. Immense talent is

waiting to be explored in our villages. S. Vijender Singh, the boxing

bronze Medal winning boxer at Beijing, is the case in point. He comes

from a rural area. D.A.V. Public School therefore envisions a Hockey

Nursery in the near future to promote talent. A team of selectors

comprising of Hockey players will explore this talent and select boys

and girls in the 5-10 years age group so that they can be molded for

the game in the Nursery.

undefined

III PASTORAL CARE: To ensure ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’

the services of a doctor, psychologist and neurologist have been made

available. Games, especially these days, are won in the mind first.

Ricky Ponting, in the recent India- Australia Series said, “We have

done our home-work and devised our strategies; we hope we can execute

them.”
The 3D’s that is Devotion Dedication and Discipline have to be

inculcated in the young players.

IV MEDIA: The role of Media in the promotion of any game cannot

be undermined. In 1970-80, the small and big achievements of Kapil Dev

who was a young player then, were highlighted by Samuel Bannerjee, the

Sports Editor of The Tribune. This stood Kapil Dev in good stead in the

long run. Mrs. Neera Sharma has promised that provisions will be made

to highlight the achievements of the young Hockey players, in the

newspapers and on T.V.

undefined

V EXPOSURE:
More Hockey matches will be organized in the school

and players will be sent out to play Hockey Fixtures. The Multimedia

room in the school will be used to show the tapes of Hockey matches as

it played in different parts of the world, in order to familiarize the

budding players with different strategies of the game.

VI FINANCES:
The Principal, Mrs. Neera Sharma feels there is a

need to request the sponsors of Hockey to promote the National Sport at

the grass root level and to achieve this objective their funds should

reach the schools directly. This direct sponsorship mode will ensure

that the funds are channelized in the right direction without any shady

intermediaries.

Though in a globalized world the list of sports is long

and comprehensive, we cannot afford to neglect our National Sport,

hockey. This will be like gaining the whole world but losing our soul,

our identity. So, let’s join hands and strive together to restore the

last glory of Hockey.

Why the difference in treatment given to players for winning the T20

World Cup and 7th Hockey Asian Cup proves that we are distancing

ourselves from our national game. Where cricketers are treated as

heroes, hockey players do not even get their due credit.. Today all

Indians Respect Our National Flag- Tringa Today all Indians Rescpect

Our NationalAnthem -Jana Gana Man But Why Mainly All Indians Donot

Respect Our National Game-Hockey I Mean That Why IN Grounds and Parks

All cHILDREN Are Playing Criket,Why Don’t Hockey we should not forget

hockey is the game world learnt from us and we are now distancing

ourselves from the game. It is time that the corporates, media and

Indian Hockey Federation take care of the future of hockey and its

players and the government should come forward openly to promote it as

the country’s favourite game. Incentives, prizes and support should be

made lucrative so that people crave to become a hockey players rather

than joining the mad rush of becoming cricket players. I personally do

not feel that Indian hockey has lost its fan following. Indians by

heart are attached to hockey; otherwise “Chak De” would have not been

applauded so much. Thanks to Badshah Khan who truly understood the

spirit of Indian hockey and acted with so much of passion. The promise

that Indian hockey players have shown recently reflects that the

revival of hockey in India is not a dream. It is going to be a reality.

I surely hope so! We Should Prefer More Hockey Than Cricket As It Is

Our National Game Its My Heartly Request To All Youngsters Not Prefer

The Videshi Khel- Cricket If The Hockey Has Some Impression On People

This Because Of Some Of Individuals Only .

Indian National Game Hist.

MS Randhawa on 10/11/2008 11:15:15 AM

Hockey is one of the many sports derived from pre historic man’s

delight in stick and ball games. It is a game played between two teams

on a field with curved sticks and a small hard ball. Its birth place

was Asia and authorities credit Persia with having devised it about

2000BC. Modern hockey was created in England. The true ancestor of

hockey was Irish hurling. The first hockey club was formed in

Blackheath in 1861. The first international match was played in 1895

between England and Ireland. In 1908 hockey was included in the modern

Olympic Games. The most extra ordinary aspect of its evolution is that

a game once so rough and unruly was adopted by women. Hockey became

popular in India when the British Regiments played the game in India

and introduced it in the British Indian Regiments who quickly picked up

the game. The first hockey club was formed in Calcutta in 1885-86

followed by Bombay and Punjab. The Bengal Hockey was the first Hockey

Association in India founded in 1908. With the popularity of the game,

associations were formed in different states like Bombay, Bihar, Orissa

and Delhi. In Olympic games India played hockey for the first time in

1928 held in Amsterdam and won the title. India lifted the Olympic

Hockey Crown for five time in a row. India’s first Olympic entry in

hockey culminating in victory gave the Indian Hockey Federation a name

and reputation. Dhyan Chand, Allen, Norris, Pinniger, Yusuf Gateley and

Cullen were some of the brilliant hockey players. Women in India have

also been taken up to hockey. Women’s hockey has been included in the

Asiad 82. Their standard of play is fairly good. A series of coaching

camps has helped the players attain a commendable standard Basically

cricket is more interesting than hockey. Talking about India, by the

1980’s Indians were quite bored with hockey, and there were no much

progress in hockey by India. That is when Kapil Dev’s Indian Team won

the Cricket World Cup of 1983, which changed the way In

Street Hockey
by MS Randhawa on 10/11/2008 11:05:46 AM
Another form of popular hockey is Street Hockey, sometimes known as

road hockey. This is usually played with the same rules as ice hockey,

or roller hockey, except it is on the street. Most of the time, a ball

is used instead of a puck, because a puck behaves erratically and would

be too difficult to hit on an asphalt or cement surface. Street hockey

is played year round

Roller Hockey
by MS Randhawa on 10/11/2008 11:04:58 AM
Inline hockey is a variation of roller hockey very similar to ice

hockey, from which it is derived. Inline hockey is played by two teams,

consisting of four skaters and one goalie, on a dry rink divided into

two halves by a center line, with one net at each end of the rink. The

game is played in three 15-minute periods with a variation of the ice

hockey off-side rule. Icings are also called, but are usually referred

to as illegal clearing. For rink dimensions and an overview of the

rules of the game, see IIHF Inline Rules (official rules). Some leagues

and competitions do not follow the IIHF regulations, in particular USA

Inline and Canada Inline.

Ice Hockey
by MS Randhawa on 10/11/2008 11:02:24 AM
Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice, using a three inch

(76.2 mm) diameter vulcanized rubber disc called a puck. This puck is

often frozen before high-level games to decrease the amount of bouncing

and friction on the ice. The game is contested between two teams of

skaters. The game is played all over North America, Europe and in many

other countries around the world to varying extent. It is the most

popular sport in Canada, where it is the national sport, Finland, the

Czech Republic, and in Sweden. The governing body is the 64-member

International Ice Hockey Federation, (IIHF). Men’s ice hockey has been

played at the Winter Olympics since 1924, and was in the 1920 Summer

Olympics. Women’s ice hockey was added to the Winter Olympics in 1998.

North America’s National Hockey League (NHL) is the strongest

professional ice hockey league, drawing top ice hockey players from

around the globe. The NHL rules are slightly different from those used

in Olympic ice hockey: the periods are 20 minutes long, counting

downwards. There are three periods. Ice hockey sticks are long L-shaped

sticks made of wood, graphite, or composites with a blade at the bottom

that can lie flat on the playing surface when the stick is held upright

and can curve either way, legally, as to help a left- or right-handed

player gain an advantage. There are early representations and reports

of ice hockey-type games being played on ice in the Netherlands, and

reports from Canada from the beginning of the nineteenth century, but

the modern game was initially organized by students at McGill

University, Montreal in 1875 who, by two years later, codified the

first set of ice hockey rules and organized the first teams. Ice hockey

is played at a number of levels, by all ages.

In this country when CHAK DE INDIA was released everyone was using its

slogan for their own purpose for example chak de bhojpuri,CHAK de

BACCHE,chak de cricket. No one used it for hockey jo ke uska asli

hakdaar hai….This song lookz good on HOCKEY than other things…i

want to convey my message to all the younsters that they should make

CHAK DE india song as their callertunes so that everyone can get

inspired by it…Boys should put stickers of chak de on their bikes

rather than putting junk stuff…if anyone gets interacted with media

he/she should tell them about condition of hockey and measures to

promote it…Chak De hockey slogan should be used by youngsters to

promote hockey all over…youngsters have great energy and with unity

we can change the world…it will be great if we unite together to

promote hockey…if we’ll not take steps then who will show

interest….todays young generation can change anything if there is

will and determination…

i totally agree with you mr. randhawa that we people should come

forward to promote hockey but what about the pay packages given by

hockey federation to the players ,its very less…cricket is spreading

everywhere because BCCI is giving lots of money and todays younsters

will choose only that game in which huge amount of money is involved,by

this they can support their family and can live their live

fully…Thesedays Which parent will encourage his/her child to take a

game which dosen’t involve money and fame.I am not with cricket i’m

just saying that as cricket involves so much money hockey federation

should also try to sponsor players so that they can feel motivated.More

and more palyers will join in only if its current situation

changes.Hockey tournaments should be organised in different cities so

that players from different parts of the country can

participate.National camps should be there.Sponsership should be given

to the low society players who cannot afford heavy expenses on sports

equipments and training..

be it cricket, hockey or football. we should not find fault with him

just because he acted as hockey coach but in practice purchased a

cicket team. may be if situation is right, he might enter hockey field

also. hockey situation now is not good people like shah rukh khan has

to wait for opportune moment to come and contribute for hockey. sunil

shetty, gul panag (model and tv personality) are doing their bit for

such borin thing, its boring than lectures, a total waste of

time, cricket should NOT BE INCLUDED in OLYMPICS,COMMONWEALTH GAMES OR

ASIAN GAMES as it will spoil the fun of other games….there should be

our moral responsibility towards hockey to promote it bcoz it is our

national game….and a respectable game…the minds of indian people

,media, brands and politicians has been jammed by cricket…to improve

the condition of hockey we should Involve sponsors to sponsor

If we see in the past and even in the present, PUNJAB as a state has been the lifeline of indian hockey….other states shud also come forward and do sumthing 4 the sake of Hockey…For the downfall of Hockey,no one other than us is responsible…we indian people only have time to sit before tv and shout on sachin’s sixers which is seen very rarely but soorry to say we never hoot with joy at goal done by Sandeep Singh or prabjot singh because we dont have time to watch hockey match, there is lack of motivation…There are many people who don’t even know the names of any 5 hockey players…If it goes like this I Think Hockey should be made compulsory at school level….

DAV public school, lawerence Road amritsar is one of the best schools in amritsar….It is good that this school is introducing and promoting hockey…I think other schools which are not involved in hockey yet, will also start taking interest by following this school….DAV PUBLIC is known for well disciplined children and good teaching staff…My younger brother is studying in this school he told me how Prof. Randhawa of DAV COLLEGE,when he visted their school, motivate and inspired them and told them to make india a hockey loving nation as it was before….Principle and teachers were so much inspired by the speech of Mr. Randhawa that they introduced their school hockey team after few days….They remembered the spirit of ‘chak de india’….Now this school has both girls and boys hockey team….they go for various tournaments in different cities….so,hockey spirit is still alive in our hearts it just needs some efforts by the people, schools, colleges, universities, organisations to make it effective….If we people unite together we can change the present situation of hockey very soon!!….HARVEER ARORA,BBA-1,D.A.V COLLEGE AMRITSAR

It is the irony of Indian sports culture that no indian is aware of what is going on in India.Nobody ever dare to think how poor India’s performance is in the world sports Arena. There is only one popular game that is cricket but in other countries like Holland,China,Australia,Germany,Korea,Japan the story is different. To Our Schools, colleges in this context do their best to promote hockey,Whole Hockey declamation,Hockey news.In the daily assembly students are advised to bring more Hockey news, but sorry to say when the bring news, they bring on cricket only….

Girl of Sacred Heart school saying that I too want to play hockey but in my school there was no hockey. When Sacred heart school will come to know how important the matter is.This strange story you will find in many schools.

National game hockey was incredible at times b4 1950s.It was ruling as king over other games. After that time this game is loosing its individuality. And the blame goes to us- indians like me who r foccusing on other games hockey is our national game.As we sing national anthem everyday, banned killing national bird peacock, y do v dont give first preference 2 our national game hockey.

Why Cricket is ruling our hearts and minds…??? what has it given to us??? popularity…NO….fame….No….money…ONLY TO PALYERS….people always looses their money and time watching it….Cricket is popular only in around 6-7 countries…most of the countries don’t even know about this game…then why we people are giving so much importance to this game rather than giving importance to such a popular game like HOCKEY which is in OLYMPICS…..and in OLYMPICS around 200-210 countries participate….it is the world’s biggest event…but we people don’t even bother to pay attention towards it….After all hockey is our national game….it is our duty to make it number 1 sport in INDIA….WHEN INDIAN CRICKET TEAM LOSSES SO MANY MATCHES EVEN THEN SO MANY PEOPLE GO AND WATCH IT AND PRAY FOR THEM BUT WHEN INDIAN HOCKEY TEAM LOSES 1 OR 2 MATCHS NO-ONE EVER CARES TO GO AGAIN TO CHEER UP FOR THEM….HOCKEY IS GAME IT ALSO NEEDS SUPPORT BY PEOPLE…EVERYONE DO COME FORWARD TO MAKE HOCKEY AS SPECIAL AS IT WAS IN EARLIER TIME…..

every indian should have a zest to stir up hockey and make it incredible as it was b4. now-a-days major hindrance in promotion of hockey is cricket so we should try to remove it. indians should provide all their efforts to promote hockey and make it aggressive than another games. it will only be possible if we devote our attention 2wards hockey. so indians “let cricket be jealous of hockey” CHAK DE HOCKEY.

Hockey is the national game.We should not only play it bt also respect it. Today cricket is liked by everyone which is the game time wastage bt hockey is a game of just 1 hrs and is enjoyable. Chak de India movie is also made to promote hockey game and to bring back the fame and respect for our national game back.so we should understand what Jaideep Sahani want to convey that is to bring that glorious period back and that trophies back to India. so it is high time to be alert and start playing hockey. So come on friends pick up the hockey stick and lets play it and lets again bring that golden period back.So come on and say CHAK DE HOCKEY!

Remember everyone, Asia’s first Olympic gold medal was won by the 1928 Indian Olympic hockey team and yes,It was our indian hockey team which won 8 grand gold medals in olympics and made us proud on the international level…it made us capable of facing other countries in world sports arena….provided fame, popularity, excellent players, etc….PEOPLE were mad about this game in early 90’s..Now what happened to our janta…???They have time for cricket….YES alwayz….for Hockey….no never….This is the main reason for the downfall of indian hockey ….people of india are letting it down by not bothering about it….It needs support, encouragement by the people so that it can stand again and face the world….It is not late, still we can make the difference if we unite together to promote hockey all over india… younsters can definately change the present situation by carrying out rallies, flags of chak de hockey, making chak de india as their callertunes, putting stickers of chak de india and hockey on bikes and cars…talking to media about condition of hockey, writing motivational articles, topics on hockey for hockey lovers and Aam janta, speechs, debates in schools and colleges by various students….i hope it will help people to think broadly and open mindedly about hockey….From HARVEER ARORA,BBA-1,DAV COLLEGE AMRITSAR
