SSB and Sports College registered wins against their respective rivals Lucknow United Club and Police Radio on the opening day of district hockey league at Babu stadium. SSB got the better of United Club 2-0, with Gunaimani Singh (32nd minute) and L Joy Singh (48th minute) being the scorers. Sports College on the other hand had to fight a bit more against Police Radio before emerging a 2-1 winner. All the three goals in the match came from penalty corners. After Durga (26th minute) and Ram Vijay (52nd minute) scored for Sports College, A Kumar (57th minute) pulled one back for the Police Radio.

Earlier the league was inaugurated by Ravinderpal Singh, an Olympic gold medal winner at the 1980 Moscow Games.

Wednesday’s fixtures: Sports College vs Babu Club (2.30 pm), Northern Railway vs Red Eagle Club (4 pm).
