K ARUMUGAM
“It was in 1989. I was not getting chance to play in the Sub-Junior Nehru Cup, warming the bench for long. lately, I was substituted as a player was not available due to injury. I was asked to play left-half position, mostly defender. My hockey career commenced on that day” revealed Dr. Dilip Tirkey, who heads Hockey India now. He was speaking at Errol D’Cruz and K. Arumugam’s book releasing function today at the iconic Shivaji Stadium in New Delhi.
The book is entitled, MARCH OF GLORY: The story of India’s 1975 World Cup hockey triumph.
Pointing out his grassroots coach Ajay Kumar Bansal, he said,” You know that day Sir. I had to play as defender, the position that came to stay with me for all these years since made my international debut in 1995″.
“Shivaji stadium is iconic in may ways. Its a traditional centre. Our school team used to take part in the Sub-Junior and other age category tournaments when I started my hockey career. It used to be our dream to come Delhi, and take part in the prestigious tournament. However, I was not getting chance to play as there were better players, but that one day when I was substituted by my coach changed my career. Probably I grabbed the chance, and satisfied him (coach). After that one match, I had become a regular since then. And you all know rest of my career.”
He was addressing a select gathering assembled for the release of the said book.
