3 Agnel girls named in state hockey teams

Girls will represent U-14, U-17 teams

Three girls from Vashi-based Fr Agnels Multipurpose School have been selected in the Maharashtra team for the inter-school national-level hockey tournament to be conducted by School Games Federation of India (SGFI). While Ria Badala and Divya Bohara, both eighth standard students have been selected in the under-14 category, Priya Deshmukh, the tenth standard student has been named in the under-17 category.

The girls were selected following selection trials conducted by the DSO at Fr Agnels ground. Along with above girls, Vishakha Vamanjur, Nupur Machale and Manpreet Kaur Saini also took part in the selection trials but missed the bus.

The national inter-school hockey tournament for under-14 girls will be played in the second week of November at Haryana while the national meet for under-17 girls will be conducted in December, the venue of which has not been decided yet.

The girls U-14 and U-17 hockey team of Agnels lost the in the divisional level tournament but the six girls, three in the each category were selected to take part in the selection trials for the state team. Divya Bohara is a goal keeper while Priya Deshmukh plays right full back and Riya Badala is a centre half player.

Surinder Singh Ahluwalia, the hockey coach of Fr Agnels School said, “A player is not selected on the basis of the goals that he or she scores, but is selected because they are capable of making the right moves at right time and are able to put their team in a winning position. The girls who got selected are among the strongest players of their respective teams and play well.”
