Mumbai: Mumbai Customs won a match (2-1) they could have nearly lost. They came from a goal down to defeat Maharashtra State Police in the Hockey Super League clash at the Mahindra Stadium, Tuesday.
MS Police, who took the lead in the 9th minute through a Vinod Nimbore hit, looked good for more before their defence started making silly mistakes and virtually handed the game on a platter to Customs.
Customs equalised through Javed Khan deflection. But the goal was disputed as MS Police staged a walk-out claiming no Customs player got a touch. Three minutes later, better sense prevailed and they were back on field.
Their midfield held sway and sought to break Customs defence down the centre. On the other hand, Customs routed their attacks from the right.
In the second half, Police defence played like school boys with the clearances reaching the nearest Customs players. It happened many times. Customs merrily took on their chances and one such move from the left resulted in a winner with Niraj Yadav smashing the ball into the underside of the goal, the ball bouncing in.
