Mumbai Magicians: Only 2 wins away from semis

With the completion of 25 games in the ongoing Hero Hockey India League, the points table is delicately poised for a couple of teams and much comfortably placed for the rest.

As just 5 league matches remain, each of five teams has two engagements each.

These matches are inconsequential to Delhi Waveriders (44 points), Ranchi Rhinos (31 points) and Punjab Warriors (27 points) as they are through to the semis.

For the other two — Mumbai Magicians and Uttar Wizards — the climax is yet to come.

With 22 points, one win for Uttar Pradesh Wizards will seal the fate for Mumbai Magicians who are at 14 points.

Both have a game left where they face each other. In their earlier outings together, it was an even score – once UP won and in the other one Mumbai won, their only win the league so far.

So, if Magicians are able to thrash the Wizards in this game on Wednesday, then they will be eyeing the game against Delhi Waveriders v Uttar Pradesh Wizards game, the penultimate one — Match No. 29 — lined up on Thursday at 1800hrs, at Delhi.

In this game, if the Waveriders beat the Wizards or play a draw, then at 2000hrs on the same day in Mumbai, the Magicians will take on the Ranchi Rhinos with their task cut-out crystal clear – A win with a required victory margin known before hand. Not a must mention that beating Rhinos may not be that simple a task though.

However, if Wizards stun the Waveriders then Magicians’ show is over, although that looks to be bleak possibility, witnessing the way Waveriders have gone in this tournament.

And in case of points tie-up with the Wizards –- when Delhi draws with UP and Mumbai manages a win in both games — Mumbai still have a chance as they are only 3 goals behind Wizards on the goal difference. That is a minuscule one in contemporary Hockey.

Surprisingly, Mumbai Magicians have won only one match but what has kept them in fray is their meticulous picking of points in each game. They have not let their loss margin go out of their hands and have managed to grab 9 points from their 9 defeats – that is equivalent to a win and two draws.

It just a matter of finding the long lost magic wand for the Magicians. If they can bring it back, it can catapult them to the semis. The show isn’t over yet.
