New Indian Express: Sardar Sticking to Short Term Goals

By SS Shreekumar

BENGALURU: India’s hockey captain Sardar Singh feels that after some fine performances in recent months, the team is more confident and will do better in future.

“It’s too early to say anything on WHL or Rio 2016. But yes, we are working hard in every tournament. The entire team, including the coaching staff, is working towards a good show at the Rio Olympics. However, we will face tough competition from the best teams. At present, we are focusing on short term targets and improving in all departments,” Sardar told Express.

We had some good results. We tried new players and gave opportunities to young and talented boys. They performed on expected lines and showed a lot of zeal to learn and deliver under pressure. The team that has been selected for the series against Australia and WHL is well balanced. We will work on our strengths and weaknesses so that by next year, we can become a different team. Our target is to make the semis of the WHL,” Sardar added.
Reflecting upon the emerging trend of the game, Sardar said they rely on counter-attacks.

“Our defence starts not just from the men at the back but with the forwards. If every player can fall back and defend in his own space, the pressure will be less. All eleven should attack and defend whenever possible. That is the trend these days in world hockey,” he added.

“We must play like a team and our job is to understand our roles and implement the strategies of the coach on the field. Physical fitness is vital and we have it in us. I think we should do a lot better. Australia are the world’s No 1 team so more than results, what we learn will be of immense value.”

Sardar also had high opinion of youngsters. “Akashdeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Dharamvir Singh and Jasjit Singh are very good. Sreejesh and other senior players are guiding them.”
