Saturday, January 09, 2010: Oil & Natural Gas Corporation and Western Railway won their league matches in the 9th All India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup Hockey Tournament sponsored by Punjab & Maharashtra Co.Op.Bank Ltd played at the Mahindra Stadium. ONGC beat Indian Oil Corporation 2-0 with goals coming in each half.
This helped ONGC to top group ‘A’ while Indian Oil Corporation finished runners –up. Both the teams have already made the knock-out stage. The other match between Western Railway and Namdhari XI was only of academic interest as both the sides were out of the race for a semi-final place. Western Railway beat Namdhari XI 3-2 with Jay Karan scoring a brace.
ONGC gained the lead in the 11th minute of play with their reserve keeper Kamaldeep Singh finding the mark. The lead was doubled in the 45th minute by the winners through Harman. The winners earned three penalty corners, all of which proved futile.
The Western Rly and Namdhari XI failed to produce a goal in the first half. A penalty corner conversion of their second such award by defender Amarjeet Singh gave the railmen the lead in the 43rd minute. The short Sardar hammered a grounder to beat rival keeper Nanak Singh hands down.
Jaykaran scored a field goal five minutes later. Namdhari upped the ante after these reverses and equalized with two quick goals in the 54th & 56th minutes through two penalty corners. Gurmeet Singh and Gurbhej Singh their captain were the scorers. Jaykaran settled the issue for Western Railway with a minute left for full time.
Tomorrow, Bhopal XI will play Central Railways while Air India will lock horns with S.C. Railways.
