The sublime Spanish striker made his international debut at just 17 years of age in 1995.
Amat, born on June 18, 1978, duly made the squad for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, picking up the first of two silver medals.
Twelve years later, he collected his second silver at Beijing 2008.
He also has a World Cup silver (Utrecht 1998) and bronze (Moechengladbach 2006).
Amat comes from a family with a rich hockey tradition – his father Francisco, uncles Juan, Pedro and Jaime, and cousin Santi Freixa – all played for Spain.
Amat was named 2008 FIH Player of the Year, the first Spaniard to win the award.
He assisted Spain to their first ever global title at the 2004 Lahore Champions Trophy.
His best moment, however, came in the 2005 Leipzig EuroHockey Championship final in which he scored twice in the last minute against the Netherlands to make it 4-2 and bring Spain the coveted title after 31 years.
Amat collected over 300 caps for Spain, scored 150 goals and represented his country at five Olympic Games and four World Cups before retiring in 2012.
He played club hockey for Real Club de Polo de Barcelona and Club Egara.
