When India takes on the hosts Malaysia today in the final of the 18th Azlan Shah Cup, it will be India’s 75th match in this highly acclaimed annual hockey mela.

Will this grand occasion be made more memorable is what at the end of day might gladden the heart of the millions of Indians, who will be watching the Sunday proceedings with a bated breadth.

Till 2008, India had played 70 matches in Azlan Shah Cup, with 31 wins and 32 losses.

Adding four matches played so far in the current edition, Sunday match marks a landmark in the annals of India in the Azlan Shah Cup.

India played its 25th match at Ipoh against Australia on 10th may, 1996.

India played its 50th match at Kuala Lumpur against Sk on 31st June 2005.

India will play its 75th match today (12th April 2009).

India could have played as much as Malaysia had, but for not taking part five times. India did not get the invite twice, once the Govt of India refused permission as the story of misses goes on…
