Temperature rises in the TNHA chair war

The tussle for the control of Tamil Nadu Hockey Association chair is warming up. Its treasurer has already filed a case in the court against the Jothikumaran faction.

Recently, the TN Olympic Association, only body that can legally settle the issue, seemed to have woken up to the reality that there is a problem.

Though it is a known fact that substantial chunk of the TNHA electoral college is against sting tainted Jothikumaran continuing in the post as the Secretary of TNHA, the TNOA did not take them seriously. Yes, it formed a three member committee to look into the problem only to put the ball in the Indian Olympic Association courts. It could have easily convened the TNHA Annual General Meeting, conducted election, but chose to tread safe path.

However, last week TNOA wrote a letter to concerned government department to keep it away from both factions, which is almost a victory of sort for the faction opposed to Jothi.

The problem started for Jothi faction when the state sports authority conducted state level tournament with his side on the board. The first Regional Tournament has already started under the banner TNHA and the state government. Association of the state government with the disputed Jothi faction sent a alarm bell in the ranks of his rivals.

Further, Jothi’s faction has convened an Executive Committee meeting (all of a sudden Jothi and his boss KPS Gill have become more democratic, you know) for 19th Nov. It was scheduled to be held in the TNHA office located in the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Chennai. However, the rival faction brought it to the notice of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, who owns the stadium, and Jothi faction could not conduct the meeting at its office. It is another victory for the rival faction.

Perhaps to pep up the pressure, almost 20 district association officials, joined by local players, staged a protest at the gate of Radhakrishnan Stadium on Sunday against the glare of television cameras.

The interesting thing is the Chennai media of late is reporting the power struggle. So far, except a newly launched national daily, others kept mum, as if not to endanger their good name with the former IHF secretary! Now that the things are changing, they also changed. It is again a proof things are slipping out of Jothikumaran’s hands.

The interesting aspect of the whole struggle is silence of arjuna award winner and former Olympian Krishnamurthy, who is the president of the TNHA.

Another proof on the contribution of yet another former Olympian to hockey which brought it where it is now.

Hello Mr. Sandhu, I have requested to put comments under right heading. What has it got to do with being true lover of hockey? There is already a slot for schools hockey and you are trying to advertise your stuff again in each page. It makes the reader get bored. It looks as if you are putting your display boards in trains and buses like some medical doctors do in Delhi/Punjab buses. Please stick to the writes ups in each coloumns.

Dear Rajiv, yes he is the same player you are refering to. I professionally covered Champions Trophy and Asia Cup in the last three years. I have not seen him on the ground on those occaions when the TNHA was organizing these major tournaments. It was further unfortunate the media in Chennai never found its responsibility to find ouw why president of the state unit is not there? But all of a sudden I am surprised Krishnamurthy comes out of oblivion and try to do things to save his friend in turmoil. That’shy I always question the role of some section of former players in serving their masters!!!!
