An able administrator and a sportsman

S. THYAGARAJAN

Drawing inspiration from his uncle, M.A. Chidambaram, whose stewardship of the national tennis and cricket administration is hailed as exemplary, ‘MAM’ held the charge as helmsman of the Indian Hockey Federation (1974-80) and played significant administrative roles in other disciplines as well.

It was during MAM’s tenure that India won the 1975 hockey World Cup at Kuala Lumpur, and the 1980 Olympic gold in Moscow.

Even as a collegian, he evinced interest in hockey and tennis.

A milestone

The high point of MAM’s innings as IHF president was the launch, in 1978, of the India-Pakistan bi-lateral series. He met his Pakistani counterpart, Air Marshal Nur Khan, here to pave the way for the first ever home series after independence between the two nations. It was a milestone.

The four Tests played in Mumbai, Bangalore, Karachi and Lahore drew huge crowds.

Players’ welfare received due attention. He ensured the Indian players were treated on par with visiting teams in the matter of accommodation, air travel, perks, etc. He was the first to reward players generously after the Kuala Lumpur World Cup triumph.

MAM’s rapport with the FIH top brass was excellent. He hosted an international tournament at the Corporation Stadium attended by the president, Rene G. Frank. MAM served as vice-president of FIH and AHF.

As president of the State Association, MAM played a leading role in conducting two Davis Cup matches in 1973 and 1979.

The gigantic temporary galleries thrilled many enthusiasts. He honoured the contractor with a diamond ring in front of the packed galleries.

An avid polo player and referee, he was associated with the Madras Polo and Riders Club.

In the world of horse racing, MAM has a unique place.

His record includes 546 Classic wins and 11 in Turf Invitation Cup events. MAM has been associated with the Madras Race Club for decades.

MAM is currently the president of the Mylapore Club. Earlier, he was at the helm of the Presidency Club, the Cosmopolitan Club and the Suguna Vilas Sabha.
