GSF grant for Rani and Savita

BANGALORE: Two members of the National women’s hockey team, Rani Rampal and Savita Poonia, will receive a grant of Rs.4,000 each per month, from the Bangalore based Go Sports Foundation, according to the media release of the GSF.

The 15-year-old Rani Rampal, who hails from Shahbad in Haryana belongs to an economically backward family, with her father making a living as a cart puller and brothers working as carpenters.

Rani plays as a forward and she was the top goal scorer and was also adjudged the most promising young player at the Champion’s Challenge tournament held in Kazan, Russia in June, 2009.

She also played a pivotal role in the team winning the silver at the Asia Cup held in November 2009.

Savita Poonia, also hails from Haryana and is an upcoming goalkeeper.

M.K. Kaushik, the National women’s team coach, praised the support extended to the two players by GSF. “It will boost their morale,” he added.
