NEW DELHI: Skipper Jagnoor Singh smashed the match-winner in the 24th minute as Springdales Senior Secondary School (Amritsar) defeated Baba Gurmukh Singh Uttam Singh SSS (Khadoor Sahib) 1-0 in the semifinals of the ONGC 27th Nehru sub-junior hockey tournament at the Markandeshwar Stadium, Shahabad, on Wednesday.
The loser forced as many as 10 penalty corners, as against none by its opponent, but was unable to capitalise on the chances.
In the other semifinal, captain Mandeep Singh turned the match around in favour of Government Model SSS (Ladowali Road) with two penalty corner goals to help the team to a 4-1 victory over St. Mary’s HS (Simdega, Jharkhand). The teams were locked 1-1 at halftime.
It was the Jharkhand team that shot ahead in the 11th minute following a penalty corner conversion by Mangra Bhengra. Mandeep equalised in the 30th minute and put the Jalandhar team ahead with another strike in the 54th minute.
Thereafter, Lovepreet Singh and Varun Kumar added to the margin with a goal each in the 60th and 70th minutes.
