BSF retain hockey title

Guwahati, March 26: BSF retained the All India Police Hockey Championship title by defeating Punjab Police 2-1 in the final of the 58th edition of the tournament at Maulana M. Tayebulla Hockey Stadium here today.

The defending champions gained an upper hand with a field goal from Mandip Singh (Jr) in the 12th minute and managed to hold on to the lead till the first half whistle.

Saranjit Singh consolidated the lead for BSF with another field goal in the 49th minute.

Conceding two goals, the Punjab policemen, who were the runners-up in the last edition too, hit back and their concerted efforts bore fruit in the 61st minute when Jugraj Singh found the net off a penalty corner to reduce the margin. The BSF side immediately went onto the backfoot and played a defensive game to deny their opponents any further success.

Saranjit Singh was named the Best Player of the final and Sandeep Singh of Haryana Police finished as the Highest Scorer with 14 goals under his belt.

Dilip Sarma Trophy

Bokakhat Hindi High School and Don Bosco High School, Diphu entered the quarter-finals of the Dilip Sarma Trophy inter-district school (under-15) cricket tournament defeating Morigaon HS and MP School by 93 runs and Goalpara English School by six wickets respectively here today, says our Jorhat correspondent.
