PM to cheer India at hockey final today

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will watch the India-Australia hockey final while his wife Gursharan Kaur will cheer badminton star Saina Nehwal who vies for gold on Thursday.

The PM will watch the match at Dhyan Chand Stadium in the company of former hockey Olympians Zafar Iqbal, Balbir Singh, Ajitpal Singh, Ashok Kumar and others, PMO sources said.

At the same time, Gursharan Kaur will join other sport enthusiasts at Siri Fort where Saina features in the final of the women’s badminton singles.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul had cheered the Indian hockey team at the same venue where it had thrashed Pakistan 7-3 and entered the semi-finals. In the semis, India defeated England in a tie-breaker on Tuesday.
