Punjab Games: Mohali in quarterfinals
JALANDHAR: Mohali, Amritsar, Patiala and Ropar made it to the quarterfinals of the men’s hockey competition of the first Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh Punjab Games at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium on Wednesday.
Mohali beat Kapurthala 2-0. DP Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh came up with one goal each to hand victory for their team. In the second match, Amritsar drubbed Bathinda 6-0 and staked their claim for the championship. A brace by Gurpreet Singh and Roop Singh made it easy for the winners. Meanwhile, Patiala handed a 4-0 defeat to Moga in a one-sided match. Prashant, Jatinder Singh, Kulbir Singh and Sukhdev Singh fired in goals for the winners.
Ropar mauled Mansa 6-0 to a crushing defeat. Jaswinder Singh scored a brace. Dharminder Singh, Jashanpreet Siugh, Gaganpreet Singh and Varinder Singh struck for Ropar team. In the women’s category, Taran Tarn sailed into the semifinals by beating Bathinda. The match between Patiala and Jalandhar was stopped at the end 10 minutes after the lemon break due to bad light and heavy rains. The match will continue on Thursday. At the time of stoppage of the match, Patiala were leading 3-0.
