USD 52.4 Million World Cup stadium opens tomorrow

Built at a colossal cost of USD 52.4 Million, the World Cup venue is all set to open tomorrow.

Even the second pitch has 1600 seating capacity

New Delhi: 23rd January, 2010: Hockey takes the credit of being the first stadium ready for comptition out of 12 stadiums planned for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.

Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium will be declared open by Dr MS Gill, Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, tomorrow, the 24th Jan 209, here.

The heritage stadium, spread over 37 acres, completely renovated and upgraded, has come at a cost of Rs.262 Crore, which is undoubtedly hockey world’s costliest.

The stadium is the proud venue for XII Hockey World Cup to be held from 28th February to 13th March, 2010.

Off the three synthetic hockey pitches, fitted with new sprinkler systems, two will have Hinged Mast Lights, another first in the hockey world. The main field has a capacity to seat about 16,200 spectators.

The second pitch outside the main arena has 900 permanent seats and with a provision of 1600 temporary seats, which in fact is double the capacity of Madrid stadium which hosted the last Women’s World Cup in 2006!

Floodlights will emit 2200 lux illumination, which is infact high definition transmission. The mast lights can be raised up to 30 metres and can be brought down to 12 metres after any match. The Stadium has state-of-the-art sound system with required acoustic effects and also two score boards on right and left flanks overlooking the spectators’ areas.
