Born on 10th June, 1947, at Gujranwala (now in Pakistan), Harmik studied at the Malwa Khalsa Higher Secondary School in Ferozepur and then at DAV College, Jalandhar. Son of a hockey player, Harmik first appeared on the national stage at the National Schools Games in 1962 at Chandigarh. He was also part of the Punjab University XI for three years, while also representing the Combined Universities side at the National Championships in 1965- 1966. Thereafter he represented Punjab at the Nationals. At 17, he made his international debut, playing a test match against visiting France in 1964. The 19-year-old Harmik was the youngest member if the Indian team at the 1966 Asian Games, where India won gold for the first time. The solid left-half joined the Olympic bandwagon at Mexico in 1968, winning bronze. Since then, he was rarely left out of the team till he retired. He won silver at the 1970 Asian Games, gold at the SEA regional tournament in 1971, the same year he also played the first of his two World Cups. He was named captain of the Indian team at the Munich Olympics in 1972, where Harmik had the rare distinction of leading his own younger brother, Ajit Singh. In fact, other than Dhyan Chand and Roop Singh, they are the only brothers to play together for the Indian team at the same Olympics. The 1974 Asian Games was his last international outing, where he ended his international career with silver. He had the honour of leading the Asian All-Stars in 1974. After retirement, he joined the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, retiring as in-charge of its hockey department. Awarded the Arjuna in 1997; now lives in Canada
