Mukhbain Singh: A dogged defender and a penalty corner specialist, Mukhbain Singh was the star of domestic and international circuits post-1964. Born on December 17, 1942, at Batala in Punjab, Mukhbain came from a family with rich hockey tradition – his father Darbara Singh, an inside-left, was a contemporary of Dhyan Chand; his brother Santokh Singh played as a winger with the Indian team and represented Punjab Police; his two uncles, Sardar Sarath Singh and Jagdish Singh, represented Punjab at the Nationals. Mukhbain first played at the national level for Punjab at the Schools Nationals in 1959. He was selected for the senior nationals in 1964 after being coached by Dharam Singh Sr. Soon he joined Northern Railways and worked in Railways Protection Force. He made his international debut against visiting Japan in 1965 and was named a standby for the 1966 Asian Games. His first overseas tour was made the same year for the Hamburg International. He also made a tour with the Central Secretariat team to Afghanistan the same year. He came back in the national reckoning with a good outing against Kenya in the test series at home, remaining with the national side for the next three years. He was part of the 1970 Asian Games and 1972 Munich Olympics, where he emerged as the overall third topscorer with nine goals. His hat-tricks against Australia and Great Britain helped India reach the semis and finally win bronze. Mukhbain retired in 2002 and currently lives in Jalandhar. Mukhbain Singh was awarded Dhyan Chand award for Lifetime Achievement in 2009
