Born on August 18, 1927 in Multan (now in Pakistan), RS Bhola was a rare example of a good student, top class sportsman and brilliant officer. He made his first foreign trip accompanying the IHF team that  toured Malaya and Singapore in 1954, got selected for the 1956 Olympics, which successfully defended the title at Melbourne. He again played for the IHF team which toured Europe in 1959. Standing a little over six feet in his socks, Bhola who played on the left wing – the most difficult position – took full advantage of his height in carrying the attack to the opposing side. Once in possession of the ball, he struck like lightning along the touchline and was very difficult to tackle. He played his second Olympics at Rome in 1960.  He accompanied Indian teams as manager for many tours. He was also selector for national team for intermittent spells. Bhola got his early education at Khanewal and later graduated as an electrical engineer. While in Delhi in 1950 he played for Brothers Club and was selected to represent the state against the IHF team which was to tour Afghanistan. This was the beginning of a brilliant hockey career. His merit was fully recognised when he joined the Air Force in 1953. He was soon picked up as an outside left for the Services team and later had the distinction of leading his side in four National Championships. He spent his spare time in modeling technical gadgets and sketching. He passed away on 22 Jan 2019 at the age of 92.
