Born on 29th Jan 1934, forward Victor John Peter dominated the national scene for more than a decade in the 50s through 60. Hailing from Chennai's St.Thomas Mount, the region known for producing many  hockey players in the past and at present, VJ Peter first represented Mysore State in the Senior National Championships before joining Indian Army and started playing for the Services. Peter played in three Olympics (1960, 1964 & 1968) and many other tournaments including Asian Games. Two of his brothers VJ Philips and VJ Thomas also played for India with aplomb. The talented right winger was honoured with Arjuna in 1966. He  breathed his last on 30th June 1998. Later, when it was known his family was struggling, Delhi based Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hockey Tournament Society presented his wife Shanti Mary a purse of Rs.10 lac.
