Born on May 5, 1972, Dr Michael Green (3rd from left), an orthopedic surgeon by profession, shone for the Germany on the hockey pitch in the 1990s and early 2000s.
A defender with sublime skills, Green was a member of the German team that won the country’s first ever World Cup title at Kuala Lumpur 2002. He was adjudged FIH Player of the Year for the same year.
Green collected a World Cup bronze medal four years earlier in Utrecht, The Netherlands. He also represented Germany at the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Green played for Harvestehuder THC in Hamburg and after retirement devoted time to hockey off the pitch. He was, until November 2016, Chair of the FIH Athletes’ Committee and was re-elected to the FIH Executive Board at the 46th Congress in New Delhi, India.
