Spain’s triumph in the FIFA Men’s World Cup on Sunday marked the end of a long wait for global glory in a sport where it finally converted its opportunity. The victory over Argentina secured Spain’s second FIFA Men’s World Cup crown, adding to the title it won in 2010. For hockey followers, however, the achievement carries an interesting historical contrast — 0 OUT OF 5.  India it was that doused the Spainard’s fire at the Moscow Olympic hockey final 46 years ago (4-3) to post its record 8th Olympic gold, denying maiden honour to their fighting rival. 

Spain has been one of the strongest nations in international men’s hockey for decades, consistently producing world-class teams but falling agonisingly short on the biggest occasions. The Spanish men’s hockey team reached the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup final twice—in 1971 and 1998—but finished runners-up on both occasions.

The story was much the same at the Olympic Games. Spain qualified for the Olympic men’s hockey final three times—at Moscow 1980, Atlanta 1996, and Beijing 2008. On each occasion, however, the Spaniards had to settle for the silver medal, leaving them without an Olympic gold despite five appearances in the biggest finals of world hockey.

Thus, before Sunday’s football triumph, Spain had played five major men’s hockey finals—two World Cups and three Olympic finals—without lifting the ultimate trophy.

That narrative changed in football.

By defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the FIFA World Cup final, Spain once again demonstrated its pedigree on football’s grandest stage. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal as La Roja claimed their second FIFA Men’s World Cup title from two final appearances, maintaining a perfect record in football’s biggest match.

The contrast is striking:

• Men’s Olympic Hockey Finals: 3 appearances, 0 gold medals
• FIFA Men’s World Cup Finals: 2 appearances, 2 titles

While hockey remains one of Spain’s most respected team sports, its greatest dream has so far remained elusive. Football, by contrast, has delivered perfection on the world’s biggest stage, with Spain continuing its remarkable record of winning every FIFA Men’s World Cup final it has reached.
