Indian hockey stalwart Manpreet Singh is set to achieve a unique milestone at the Asian Champions Trophy, with the Jalandhar–Mohali edition marking his eighth participation in the continental tournament. The landmark appearance will place the former India captain at the top of the country’s participation records in the competition, underlining his extraordinary longevity and consistency at the highest level of Asian hockey.

Manpreet Singh, a record maker

Manpreet, who captained India during a significant phase of its international success, has been a regular presence in the national setup across different generations of players. His eighth appearance at the Asian Champions Trophy is a testament to his enduring value, adaptability and ability to remain competitive through successive tournament cycles.

The midfielder’s journey also offers a perspective on how Indian hockey has evolved over the years. Having represented India in multiple editions, Manpreet has witnessed changes in team combinations, playing styles and expectations, while continuing to contribute his experience and work rate to the side.

His record is particularly notable because the Asian Champions Trophy has become an important fixture in the international calendar, bringing together leading teams from the continent. Sustaining a place in India’s squad across eight editions requires not only technical ability but also fitness, consistency and the confidence of successive team managements.

Akashdeep Second with Six Appearances

Among other Indian players, Akashdeep Singh ranks second in the participation list, having featured in six editions of the Asian Champions Trophy. The forward, who is not part of the current squad, has been an important attacking presence for India and remains one of the tournament’s most experienced Indian campaigners after Manpreet.

The gap between the two players highlights the exceptional nature of Manpreet’s achievement. While six appearances represent considerable continuity in international hockey, Manpreet’s eighth participation sets a new benchmark for Indian players in this competition.

Overall, 85 Indian players have represented the country in the Asian Champions Trophy since its inception. This figure reflects the contributions of several generations of players who have helped India establish a formidable record in the tournament.

Four 5-times are also a galore

Three players in the current team, Krishan Pathak, Jarmanpreet Singh and captain Harmanpreet Singh will be making their fifth Asian Champions Trophy at Jalandhar – Mohali. Interestingly, the trio have played continuously last four editions and 2026th will be their fifth. Only one other player goalie PR Sreejesh had figured in five editions.

A Record Built on Consistency

India have participated in every edition of the Asian Champions Trophy held so far. Their record includes five gold medals, one silver and one bronze, making them the most successful side in the competition by title count. India’s only edition without a medal came in 2013, when the country experimented by sending its Junior World Cup probables under the captaincy of a young Manpreet Singh. The team finished fifth.

India won the inaugural title in 2011 and followed it with silver in 2012. After the fifth-place finish in 2013, the team returned to the top in 2016. India’s junior team won gold in 2018, while the senior side claimed bronze in 2021 before securing consecutive titles in 2023 and 2024.

Manpreet’s involvement across these different phases gives his eighth appearance added significance. He has been part of Indian hockey’s transition from a rebuilding phase to a period of sustained success in Asian competition. His experience and understanding of the demands of tournament hockey will remain valuable as India seek to maintain their strong record.

The Jalandhar–Mohali edition will therefore be more than another tournament for Manpreet. It will mark a personal milestone in a career defined by remarkable durability and sustained service to Indian hockey. With Akashdeep’s six appearances placing him second among Indian participants and 85 players having represented the country overall, Manpreet’s eighth participation stands out as a distinctive achievement in the history of the Asian Champions Trophy.
