Born on july 8th 1943 at Quetta (now in Pakistan), triple Olympian Harbinder Singh made India debut when he was a student, excelled at athletics and hockey. He captained first Punjab team and then Indian Railways hockey team. He won gold at the 1964 Olympics, Silver at 1968 and Bronze at 1972.  The centre-forward of remarkable striking capability, captained India at the 1974 Asian Games. He coached Indian Railways men's hockey team for about two decades; Women's National hockey team at the Moscow Olympics. He had many spells of being Govt Observer for hockey and Selector of national hockey team for Hockey India. He was honoured with Arjuna in 1967. Recognizing his extraordinary hockey career, Hockey India presented him a purse of Rs.30 lacs under Lifetime Award category in early 2020.
