Born on Dec12, 1927 in Bilaspur (then Central Province, nowadays Madhya Pradesh, pint-sized Leslie Claudius is a doyen of Indian hockey. He was the first player in the world to figure in FOUR Olympics, and also win medals in all of them (1948, 1952 & 1956 Gold; silver at 1960). The unique, four-time Olympic medallist started his career as footballer before taking up hockey. He was a regular right-half in the national teams from 1947 to 1960. He represented and led Bengal in the National Championships, and worked for Customs.

One of his son, Robert Claudius, too played for India before his pre-mature death in an accident.

He breathed his last at the age of 85 in Kolkata, where he lived most part of his life.

He was national selector for Men's team for many years.
