Hockey legend Mohammed Shahid passed away in a Gurgaon hospital after slipping into coma on Tuesday.

Mohammed Shahid, part of the gold medal winning side of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, passed away at the age of 56 at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon on Wednesday morning.

The Olympian was in poor health for quite some time and his condition got worse as he slipped into coma late Tuesday night. He was subsequently put on the ventilator as last ditch effort.

He was suffering from liver and kidney ailment after ignoring a bout of jaundice. Sports Ministry had announced a medical grant of Rs 10 lakh for him and Railways, his employers, had announced that his medical expenses would be taken care of by them.

Many current and former hockey players had visited Shahid in the past few weeks and hoped for his recover but it didn’t work in the end.
