Seeking to break a historical pattern of near-misses on the continental stage and alter their narrative on the global platform, the Indian Women’s Hockey team is set to embark on a vital strategic tour of Argentina this April. In what is being viewed as the first firm step toward creating history in a pivotal competitive year, India will engage in a long-drawn Bilateral International Series (BIS, formerly referred to as a Test Series) against the South American powerhouses. The writer has been using the term BIS for over a decade to replace somewhat hallow term Test Series.
Historically, the Indian women’s team has always found itself finishing a commendable, yet frustrating, second in Asia. While a force within the continent, China has, of late, posed a insurmountable hurdle in the finals of key events, most notably in the Asia Cup and the Asian Games. Beyond Asia, India’s women’s World Cup record is also not bright, lacking the standout results achieved by their male counterparts or historical Indian teams.
However, a renewed sense of purpose has gripped the squad. With vital major tournaments looming midway through this competitive year, the team, benefiting from the tactical continuity of returned Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne, is determined to make all efforts to create history and finally secure the top honors that have eluded them.
The preparation for these daunting challenges begins with a stern test against Argentina, a consistent force to reckon with in global hockey. The Indian squad is scheduled to tour Argentina in April for a four-match series against the formidable home side. The series promises to be a highly competitive contest, offering India the invaluable experience of taking on top-tier opponents on their own home turf.
All four matches are set to be held at the prestigious CeNARD (National Center of High Performance Athletics) in Buenos Aires. The action-packed schedule features games on 13, 14, 16, and 17 April. In a move catering to Indian audiences, all matches are scheduled for an 11:00 AM local time start, which translates to a prime-time viewing slot of 6:30 PM IST.

Encounters between India and Argentina have enjoyed a high level of competitiveness in recent years. Memories are fresh of their most recent thrilling clash in the FIH Pro League 2024–25 last June, which ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw and had to be decided by a shootout. This upcoming tour will build upon that rivalry, offering crucial high-tempo match practice against quality international opposition. This aligns perfectly with Hockey India’s strategic calendar to build necessary momentum ahead of the immediate target of the Asian Games later this year and the longer-term goal of the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and Netherlands 2026.
The series will serve as indispensable preparation for India. While the primary focus remains on performance in these four challenging fixtures, the tour also hands the coaching staff a vital opportunity to explore different player combinations and refine tactical approaches as they head into this crucial period on their operational calendar.
Speaking on the strategic importance of the tour, Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne emphasized the selection philosophy. “We are travelling to Argentina with a squad of 24 players, and that is a very deliberate choice. This tour is about giving more players the chance to perform at the highest level. Argentina is one of the best teams in the world, and that environment will tell us a lot about where each player stands. We want to see who steps up when it matters.”
Marijne also issued a clear message regarding team culture as they prepare for major challenges. “To earn a place in this team, you need to show everyone that you are a team player first. Individual quality is important, but if you cannot connect with the group and work for each other, it will be very difficult to make this squad,” he added.
