City Police, Vimal Sporting Club and Range Police recorded contrasting wins to enter the quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup Hockey tournament at Police Lines Takli ground on Monday. In the first outing of the day, City Police struggled to overcome a spirited challenge from Bramhapuri before posting a narrow 2-1 victory.

Sandeep Nagrulkar put the cops ahead in the 12th minute with a penalty corner conversion. The lead was doubled when Yogesh Yesur struck a brilliant field goal in the 48th minute. Five minutes later, Bramhapuri striker Ananta Yerawar reduced the margin and raised hopes of a late fightback. However, despite trying hard in the dying minutes, the desperate Bramhapuri boys could not find the equaliser. The second Police outfit, Range Police, did not have to stretch much against Gondia district and carved out a facile 4-1 win to book their berth in the last eight. Vinay Baghel slammed a brilliant brace (8th and 44th minutes), while Amit Yesur and Vinod Selokar chipped in with a goal each in the 15th and 48th minutes, respectively.

The lone goal for Gondia came with just a minute to go for the final hooter through Nitin Tomar. In another one-sided encounter, Vimal blanked Young Star, Kamptee 2-0. After a barren first session, Savio Francis and Samarpreet Singh scored a goal apiece for Vimal.
