The Hindu: Punjab National Bank triumphs

It was easy going for PNB at the National Stadium this time around

Punjab National Bank was third time lucky, winning the 54th senior Nehru Hockey Tournament 3-0 against Punjab and Sind Bank here on Tuesday after finishing runner-up in the competition twice in many years in the past.

The victory also meant PNB avenged its loss to the same opponent in the 2015 edition. It had lost to Indian Railways last year. But while it had been a close contest in the two previous finals, it was easy going for PNB at the National Stadium this time around.

A cautious, defensive first half saw both teams content gauging the opposition and making occasional forays into the attack. Shamsher Singh’s strike at the stroke of half time saw PNB go into the break with the slimmest of leads but a major psychological advantage.

It helped the team consolidate in the second half as PNB went all out to build on its lead. Naveen doubled the scoreline in the 58th minute to give PNB a comfortable cushion but with PSB stepping up its own attempts, it was a strong defensive show that helped the side stay ahead.

Gagandeep Singh, who also ended up being named the ‘best defender of the tournament’ and was along the top-scorers in the competition, converted a penalty corner two minutes from time to wrap up the scoreline and ensure the title for PNB and a cheque of Rs. 2 lakhs. PSB received Rs. 1 lakh as runner-up.

The result (final): PNB 3 (Shamsher Singh, Naveen, Gagandeep Singh) bt PSB 0. Best goalkeeper: Jasbir Singh (PNB). Best defender: Gagandeep Singh (PNB). Best midfielder: Hira Singh (Railways). Best forward: Jaskaran Singh (PSB). Best young player: Vishn Kant and Rakesh Dahiya (both National Hockey Academy).
